We don't often equate kindness with saving money, but we should. In her Ted Talk, Christine Porath describes several studies clearly demonstrating the cost of unkindness in the workplace. She describes how Cisco read her statistics and did their own internal research. They confirmed incivility was costing them (conservatively) twelve million dollars PER YEAR!
In stark contrast, "A simple deliberate 'thank you' increases an employee's feeling of appreciation by 116 percent, spontaneous praise increases it by 172 percent.
Here is a simple strategy any leader can begin immediately, without a budget and no need for approval. Because it is simple, it can also be implemented among supervisors and have an impact across the organization.
